What is Active?

Active is a platform that facilitates people coming together to exercise

Competitive Analysis

As a team, we reviewed 15 different apps to determine:

  • Who target users could be
  • What the key features of the apps are
  • How users are onboarded into the app

After our analysis, we found that most fitness based apps collect a user’s age, height, and weight data as basic personal information. This data helps the apps to provide fitness recommendations, so it made sense for us to collect it as well.

An interesting piece of information we found is that over half of the reviewed apps wanted to know a user’s perceived activity levels.

Through our analysis, we found that there are no apps that help people to meet exercise partners.

User Research

As a team, we conducted 11 interviews and received 65 survey responses. we used this data to construct our understanding of out potential users’s:

  • Demographic
  • Exercise experience
  • Experience with meeting up with people from industry-adjacent apps (e.g. Tinder)
  • Required usage features

Findings

We found that 62% of people who took the survey currently exercise by themselves, and that 70% of those people are willing to exercise with other people.

45% of the responders had previously met up with someone from an industry-adjacent app, but only 9% of those people had formed long-term friendships. This is something that our team thought needed to be addressed in our solution.

Pain Points

In our research, we found two main pain points that need to be addressed for a successful application.

01

Scheduling

Many of the potential users said that finding a time and place to work out was their top concern.

02

Current Level

Most of the data we found showed that users tended to want to workout with people with similar activity skill.

Safety

Both people in the user interviews and surveys mentioned that safety was paramount for them to use the app. Users want to ensure that they will be safe when choosing to meet-up with someone from the internet.
